You'll probably notice that I start my students with a hand position that isn't standard. During my first few years of teaching, I did encourage playing with the usual curved position shown in method books. I learned the hand position demonstrated here from a teacher trainer whom I apprenticed with, and find it gives students much better control of the keys, and encourages better relaxation of their hands.

That said, if you don't encourage this type of hand position with your students, I'm sure you can modify the exercises appropriately to suit your requirements.
